Cancelling Contracts in Germany
Auto-renewing subscriptions, notice periods, online two-click cancellation since 2022, letter templates, special exit rights, and how to avoid extra charges.
Updated on
Many contracts in Germany renew automatically unless you cancel on time. Phone plans, gyms, insurance, and streaming services are common examples. Missing a deadline by even one day can lock you into another term.
Since 1 July 2022, contracts signed online must offer a simple cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton) on the provider’s website. That makes ending many subscriptions much easier than calling hotlines or sending faxes.
You still need to understand notice periods (Kündigungsfrist) and contract terms. Many newcomers keep paying for services they no longer use because they did not track renewal dates.
For ending a rental lease, see Finding an Apartment for housing context alongside the legal notice rules below.
Kündigungsbutton for online contracts
Legal basis. Section 312k of the German Civil Code (BGB) requires an easy online cancellation option for contracts concluded online.
What the button must do.
- Be clearly labeled and easy to find
- Allow cancellation in no more than two clicks
- Ideally work without login where possible
- Provide immediate confirmation of cancellation
Usually covered.
- Phone and internet contracts signed online
- Streaming services (Netflix, Spotify, and similar)
- Online gym memberships
- Insurance bought online
- Other online subscriptions
Usually not covered.
- Contracts signed in person or on paper
- Contracts concluded before July 2022
- Some foreign companies without a German presence
If an online provider has no button, they may be violating consumer rules. You can report issues to the Verbraucherzentrale (consumer advice center).
Notice periods by contract type
Check your contract or terms (AGB) for Kündigungsfrist, Vertragslaufzeit, and Verlängerung.
Phone and internet (newer contracts, from December 2021 rules). Maximum 24-month initial term, then often 1 month notice, with monthly renewal after the minimum term.
Phone and internet (older contracts). Often 3 months notice. Missing the deadline can extend the contract by 12 months.
Gym memberships. Often 12 to 24 months initial term with 1 to 3 months notice. Many renew automatically for another 12 months.
Insurance. Often 1 to 3 months notice before the annual renewal date. Missing it can renew for 12 months.
Streaming services. Often cancellable anytime. Service usually ends at the current billing period.
Rental apartments. 3 months notice by law, submitted by the 3rd working day of the month.
When in doubt, cancel earlier than the latest possible date.
How to cancel online and offline
Online contracts
- Log in or open the provider site (if required).
- Find Kündigung under Mein Konto, Vertrag, or Service.
- Complete the two-click flow.
- Save the confirmation email or screenshot.
Offline or paper contracts
You may cancel by letter, email (only if the contract allows it), fax, or sometimes a customer portal. For important disputes, use registered mail with return receipt (Einschreiben mit Rückschein) from the post office. It costs a few euros and proves delivery date.
What to put in a cancellation letter (German template idea).
- Your name and address
- Contract or customer number
- Clear statement: Hiermit kündige ich meinen Vertrag…
- End at the earliest legal date: zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt
- Request written confirmation with the exact end date
- Date and signature
You usually cannot choose any random end date. The company calculates it based on notice rules.
Special cancellation rights
Extraordinary cancellation (Sonderkündigungsrecht) may apply when:
- The company raises prices (cancel within the announced window)
- You move abroad
- You move where the service is unavailable
- The contract holder dies
- Terms change significantly in your disfavor
Moving abroad. Phone and internet contracts often allow cancellation with proof of relocation. Gym rules vary. Insurance often ends when you leave Germany. Send a letter with evidence such as deregistration (Abmeldung) or a new foreign address.
14-day withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht) for many online or distance purchases: cancel within 14 days without giving a reason. Exceptions include services already fully performed, custom goods, and some digital content once download started.

Verbal or informal contract cancellations
MinorRelying on outdated cancellation rules for consumer contracts. For agreements signed after March 1, 2022, automatic 12-month renewals are banned; rolling 1-month renewals apply instead. Online contracts must include an accessible cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton), though older contracts may still require written notice with confirmation.
